    Bottom up approach of metal assisted electrochemical exfoliation of boron towards borophene

    Electrochemical exfoliation of nonconductive boron to few-layered borophene is reported. This unique effect is achieved via the incorporation of bulk boron into metal mesh inducing electrical conductivity and opening a venue for borophene fabrication via this feasible strategy. The experiments were conducted in various electrolytes providing a powerful tool to fabricate borophene flakes with a thickness of ~ 3–6 nm with different phases. The mechanism of electrochemical exfoliation of boron is also revealed and discussed. Therefore, the proposed methodology can serve as a new tool for bulk scale fabrication of few-layered borophene and speed up the development of borophene-related research and its potential application.

    Oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) are crucial for renewable energy technologies such as water splitting. Borophene, a two-dimensional (2D) boron material, has attracted significant interest for its unique electron deficiency and potential applications in energy conversion. However, practical studies on borophene's electrocatalytic performance remain limited. Here, we demonstrate a strategy to enhance the bifunctional electrocatalytic activity in HER and OER of borophene by doping with zirconium compounds. The addition of Zr to boron enhances electrocatalytic properties by improving performance in both OER and HER, achieving overpotentials and Tafel slopes of 252 and 240 mV, 43 and 203 mV/dec, respectively. Additionally, conducting the measurements at 40°C led to achieving the overall water-splitting potential of 1.541 (V vs. RHE). Stability tests over 1000 hours at ±10 mA/cm² highlight the composite's robustness, outperforming Pt/C in HER and matching the stability of RuO₂ in OER. Ex-situ analyses: X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR), and X-ray diffraction (XRD) reveal insights into the chemical structure evolution during the electrochemical process. This study not only advances the understanding of borophene's electrocatalytic mechanisms but also paves the way for its application in efficient and sustainable energy technologies.

    Incorporating metal oxide nanoparticles into cement-based composites delays the hydration process and strength gain of cementitious composites. This study presents an approach toward improving the performance of bismuth oxide (Bi2O3) and gadolinium oxide (Gd2O3) particles in cementitious systems by synthesizing core–shell structures via a sol-gel process. Two types of silica coatings on cementitious pastes with 5% and 10% substitution levels were proposed. The rheology, hydration, and mechanical properties of the pastes were analyzed to determine the relationship between the coating type and nanoparticle concentration. The results indicate that despite the significant disparities in the performance of the resulting material, both methods are appropriate for cement technology applications. Bi2O3’s silica coatings accelerate the hydration process, leading to early strength development in the cement paste. However, due to the coarse particle size of Gd2O3, silica coatings exhibited negligible effects on the early age characteristics of cement pastes.

    It is of great scientific and economic value to recycle waste poly (ethylene terephthalate) (PET) into high-value PET-based metal organic frameworks (MOFs) and further convert it into porous carbon for green energy storage applications. In the present study, a facile and cost-effective hydrothermal process was developed to direct recycle waste PET bottles into MIL-53(Al) with a 100% conversation, then the MOF-derived porous carbon was assembled into electrodes for high-performance supercapacitors. The results indicated that the as-synthesized carbon exhibited high SSA of 1712 m2 g−1 and unique accordion-like structure with hierarchical porosity. Benefit to these advantageous characters, the assembled three-electrode supercapacitor displayed high specific capacitances of 391 F g−1 at the current density of 0.5 A g−1 and good rate capability of 73.6% capacitance retention at 20 A g−1 in 6M KOH electrolyte. Furthermore, the assembled zinc ion capacitor still revealed outstanding capacitance of 335 F g−1 at 0.1 A g−1, excellent cycling stability of 92.2% capacitance retention after 10 000 cycles and ultra-high energy density of 150.3 Wh kg−1 at power density of 90 W kg−1 in 3M ZnSO4 electrolyte. It is believed that the current work provides a facile and effective strategy to recycle PET waste into high-valuable MOF, and further expands the applications of MOF-derived carbons for high-performance energy storage devices, so it is conducive to both pollution alleviation and sustainable economic development.

    This study presents a new approach towards the production of sol-gel silica-coated Bi2O3/Gd2O3 cement additives towards the improvement of early mechanical performance and radiation attenuation. Two types of silica coatings, which varied in synthesis method and morphology, were used to coat Bi2O3/Gd2O3 structures and evaluated as a cement filler in Portland cement pastes. Isothermal calorimetry studies and early strength evaluations confirmed that both proposed coating types can overcome retarded cement hydration process, attributed to Bi2O3 presence, resulting in improved one day compressive strength by 300% and 251% (depending on coating method) when compared to paste containing pristine Bi2O3 and Gd2O3 particles. Moreover, depending on the type of chosen coating type, various rheological performances of cement pastes can be achieved. Thanks to the proposed combination of materials, both gamma-rays and slow neutron attenuation in cement pastes can be simultaneously improved. The introduction of silica coating resulted in an increment of the gamma-ray and neutron shielding thanks to the increased probability of radiation interaction. Along with the positive early age effects of the synthesized structures, the 28 day mechanical performance of cement pastes was not suppressed, and was found to be comparable to that of the control specimen. As an outcome, silica-coated structures can be successfully used in radiation-shielding cement-based composites, e.g. with demanding early age performances.

    Nanobioinżynieria to obszar badawczy o charakterze interdyscyplinarnym, leżący na styku biotechnologii i nanotechnologii, wykorzystujący nowoczesne technologie, urządzenia i aparaturę badawczą oraz metody biologii i chemii doświadczalnej, a ponadto praktyczne zastosowanie wiedzy z zakresu fizyki, inżynierii chemicznej, inżynierii materiałowej, biochemii, fizjologii, mikrobiologii, wirusologii, biologii komórki, genetyki molekularnej, inżynierii genetycznej, proteomiki, kultur in vitro i informatyki, jak również pracę eksperymentalną z użyciem materiału biologicznego w ujęciu nanotechnologicznym, która umożliwia tworzenie nowych rozwiązań technologicznych i przemysłowych. Niniejsze opracowanie przeznaczone jest głównie dla studentów kierunków biotechnologia oraz inżynieria materiałów i nanomateriałów realizujących specjalistyczne zajęcia praktyczne z zakresu nanobioinżynierii.

    Recycling of Plastic Wastes for the Mass Production of Yolk−Shell-Nanostructured Co3O4@C for Lithium-Ion Batteries

    Facing the ever-increasing production of municipal plastics, great efforts have been made to recycle plastic waste into high value-added products. As the main components of plastic wastes, PP, PE and PS are uncharred polymers, which are hard to be carbonized under normal conditions. To address this issue, transition metal catalysts (Co3O4) were introduced to carbonize the plastic waste with high carbon yields. Herein, the mixed waste plastics (PP/PE/PS) were carbonized into yolk-shell structured Co3O4@carbon nanomaterials with high yield of 49 wt%. A high capacity of 1066 mAh g-1 at 0.1 A g-1 after 100 cycles in lithium-ion batteries. Moreover, the galvanostatic intermittent titration technique (GITT) results estimated that the YSS Co3O4@C possessed a higher Li+ diffusion coefficient, ensuring an improved cycling stability and rate performance. The present strategy not only provides a potential approach for recycling waste plastics into high-value carbon materials, but also shows the possibility for the mass production of high-performance nanosized anode materials for LIBs in a commercial way.
