Experiments carried out at the Lipki Agricultural Experimental Station in the Szczecin province were concerned with choosing plants for second crops grown on lighter soils after winter catch crops of winter vetch with rye and of later sown winter vetch with scarlet clover and Italian rye grass (the Gorzów mixture). After both forecrops, better cropping mixtures gave 300-400 q/ha of green matter. Higher yields of green matter were obtained after the earlier gathered mixture of winter vetch with rye, but growing the second crops after the mixture of winter vetch with scarlet clover and Italian rye grass also gave good results. Sunflower and dent corn were the plants which grew better in those conditions, and among papilionaceous plants were field pea, horse bean, and common vetch. Good mixtures were with sunflower (tab. 9). They were more resistant to drought and weediness.
