    The three-year (1962-1964) research on soil insects in lucerne after different years of cropping proved that they are settling most numerously in the older (III and IV-year) lucerne plantations. Among them, the Carabidae and Staphylinidae beetles dominate, the number of which increases significantly in the older lucerne. These are useful insects as they prey upon pests. The permanence of lucerne has no effect on the increase of noxious insects' number except for the Curculionidae larvae. Yet the Elateridae larvae, and also the Diptera and Lepidoptera ones, maintain in the same quantities in lucerne after different years of cropping. The results of the research proved that the perennial cultivation of lucerne does not affect the gathering of pests which would endanger neighboring agricultural plantations.
